DEFTONES Bassist Improving Following Pneumonia Diagnosis

DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng is showing signs of improvement after being diagnosed with pneumonia, according to a post by his family at the One Love For Chi web site. The bass player, who has been in a semi-comatose state since being injured in a November 2008 car accident, was just brought home after treatment at a recovery center in New Jersey. Cheng has been assisted by mechanical ventilation but the doctors hope to begin weaning him off the breathing machine as soon as today (Monday, June 18).

Cheng had been showing more signs of emerging from his condition over the past few months, although he has still been mostly unable to move or speak.

Much of Cheng's treatment at a special facility in New Jersey has been funded by fans and friends, with DEFTONES holding several benefit concerts and donating money from the band's tours.

DEFTONES are in the studio working on a follow-up to 2010's "Diamond Eyes", one of the band's most successful outings yet. Sergio Vega continues to play bass for the group in Cheng's absence.
